Week 1
Hello everyone!
Thanks for a great first day! I've included some of the images from our first class along with links to various websites. Feel free to browse through them at your leisure.
A lot of students were interested in Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty. His website:
http://www.robertsmithson.com/ has more information on the Jetty, as well as other environmental artworks. I recommend scanning through his drawings, sculptures, and earthworks!
http://www.animalnewyork.com/tag/hurricane-sandy/
ANIMAL has a lot of interesting articles on/images from Hurricane Sandy. Definitely take a look and keep ANIMAL in mind as daily news source on local art, culture, news, politics, and activities in NYC.
Photographers! This is a cool collection of iphone photos from the hurricane sandy disaster:

Project Ideas!
Several large eggs (each 100 feet wide) were spread on th Zaailand, one of the largest city squares in the Netherlands.
Nele Azevedo “Melting Men” project
He is an award winning Brazilian sculptor,
artist and researcher.
He created 1000 tiny figures out of ice and
placed them on the steps of the concert hall in Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt Square.
His Melting Men ice sculpture installations are meant to bring awareness to warn that melting ice could cause
sea levels to rise more than 3.3 feet by 2100. The sculptures are intended to highlight the
direct effect of climate change in the Arctic and the future of humanity and
nature on the planet as a whole. In Berlin where the temperature was
about 23 celsius the figures started melting within about a half hour.
